The Coefficient of Friction (COF) is a surface parameter that quantifies the force required to initiate or maintain relative motion between two surfaces in contact. In the flexible plastic film, packaging, and packaging materials sectors, the COF is critical for proper processability on packaging machinery (filling, sealing, and printing lines) and for the performance of the finished product. There are two types of COF: the Static COF (μₛ), measured at the maximum resistance force immediately before the start of movement, and the Dynamic COF (μₖ), calculated as the average of the sliding force recorded over a predefined distance. Both values are influenced by the chemical nature of the surface, surface roughness, the presence of additives (lubricants or anti-seize agents), temperature and humidity conditions, and sliding speed.
